Name?

Marjon Carlos

Occupation?

Journalist, public speaker, your favorite auntie

If you were a color, what color would you be and why?

As an Aries, my power color is red and whenever I wear it, I feel invincible.

Who is a woman that inspires you?

There are so many...I definitely surround myself with inspiring women/femmes like Pam Nasr, Julee Wilson, Crystal Anderson, Lula Dualeh, Erika Hart, Cynthia Cervantes Gumb, Christina Coleman, Allison Brown. Their ambition and creativity inspire me to do my best.

What is your favorite piece of art, film or book you have seen or read recently?

I recently attended the Henry Taylor show at Blum and Poe in NY, and was so overwhelmed by the beauty. He's a Los Angeles-based painter who creates these crude portraitures of mostly black subjects and his handling of colors and the brush strokes are both chaotic and elegant. I get really overwhelmed when I look at his work because I think they depict black life today so perfectly: there is a quiet, beautiful intensity to them.

Where would you like to travel to next?

I want to go back to New Orleans or Jamaica--I feel really alive in both of those places.

What keeps you motivated when you need an extra push?

I try to remind myself and my friends of this all the time: this career thing isn't even about us ultimately. It's about younger folks--and specifically younger POCs--who are looking at us for inspiration, and so I really try to keep that in mind. I get tired, frustrated, impatient all the time, but knowing people are watching me, keeps me motivated. I also just want to fulfill my destiny. I would never want to waste my talents or blessings, so I'm pretty hard on myself. My Virgo moon and rising keep me working hard, and my Aries sun makes me want to win, win, win.

How does wearing Tanya Taylor make you feel?

This dress made me feel particularly sexy. The dress is super bod con, with no back, and I didn't wear a bra. It was just all me.
